Our offices are located right in the heart of the New Bedford National Historical
Park just steps away from the beautiful waterfont. Our 8-pillar building, which
hasn’t changed much over the years, was built in 1831 and designed by the famous
Architect Russell Warren. The building was built to house two prominent banking
institutions: Merchants Bank and Mechanics Bank. In fact, the rival banks hired
two different builders to construct the building. Due to a disagreement between
the builders there is a slight difference between the vertical slope of the four
columns on the left and the four on the right, further distinguishing the two banks.
For 61 years the building housed the two banks; Merchants Bank was on the right
and Mechanics Bank was on the left. The prosperous whaling elite walked their money
through the right door, while the humble shopkeepers and skilled trades people and
fisherman marched money through the left.Water street was the Wall Street of New
Bedford, New Bedford being the richest city in the world at the time.Practically
all banks insurance offices, brokers’ offices, lawyers’ offices, and telegraph offices
were concentrated within these limits.
J.J. BEST BANC & CO. is keeping history alive in this iconic banking building.
